Santorini is famous for romantic sunsets, but it can be a wonderful island for families too – if you plan it well. Here is what we tell the families who travel with us.

1. Choose the hotel carefully

The hotels on the caldera cliff in Oia, Imerovigli and Fira are beautiful, but many have long staircases and small pools. With a stroller or elderly parents, ask for a suite with few steps, choose a larger resort or villa with a private pool, or stay on the flat east coast in Kamari or Perissa.

2. The beaches

Kamari and Perissa have long black-sand beaches with sunbeds, calm water and tavernas just behind. The sand gets very hot, so bring sandals. The Red Beach near Akrotiri is beautiful from the viewpoint, but parts of it can be closed because of falling rocks.

3. The boat trip

The highlight for children is a boat trip around the caldera: walk on the volcano of Nea Kameni, swim in the warm springs and have lunch on board. A private catamaran lets you choose the timing and the food.

4. Avoid the sunset crowds

At sunset the streets of Oia are full. Watch it from your hotel terrace, from the boat, or from the quieter village of Pyrgos, and visit Oia in the morning.

Food: halal meat is rare on the island. Fish, calamari, tomato fritters, fava and Greek salads are easy choices, and a private chef can cook for you at your villa.

5. Getting around

Buses are crowded in summer and taxis are few. A car with driver for the airport and the day trips makes everything easier with children.
