Lake Como’s villas are its treasure: noble houses of the 17th to 19th centuries with gardens of camellias, azaleas and cypress trees going down to the water. Most can only be seen properly from the lake – which is why a boat is the best way to discover them.
Villa del Balbianello
On a wooded point near Lenno, surrounded by water on three sides, Balbianello is the most photographed villa on the lake and has appeared in many famous films. Its terraced garden and loggia have breathtaking views. Arriving by boat is the classic way.
Villa Carlotta
In Tremezzina, opposite Bellagio, Villa Carlotta has a museum of sculptures and paintings and a huge botanical garden. Visit in April and May, when the rhododendrons and azaleas cover the hillside in colour.

Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio
In Bellagio, the gardens of Villa Melzi stretch along the shore with a Japanese garden and lake views. The park of Villa Serbelloni, on the hill above the village, can be visited with a guide.
Villa Monastero, Varenna
A former convent turned villa, with a long garden of palms and citrus trees right on the water – perfect for a quiet walk after lunch in Varenna.
Why a private boat?
- You see the facades and gardens as they were designed – from the water.
- You avoid the queues for the public ferries in summer.
- Your captain stops where you like, for photos or a swim.
- It is comfortable for children and elderly parents, with shade and privacy.
Good to know: most villas open from March or April to early November and some close one day a week. Book Balbianello in advance in summer.
