Rome can be overwhelming: so much to see, so many people, and long walks on cobblestones. The good news is that the main sights are close together. This three-day plan covers the essentials at a pace that works for the whole family.

Day 1: Ancient Rome

Start at 8:30 at the Colosseum with a booked guide – the stories of gladiators and emperors keep children fascinated. Continue through the Roman Forum and up the Palatine Hill for the view. Rest at the hotel in the afternoon, then go out again in the evening to see the Colosseum lit up.

Day 2: The Vatican

Book the first entry of the day to the Vatican Museums. The route through the galleries to the Sistine Chapel is long; a guide helps you see the best parts without getting lost. Then visit St Peter’s Basilica and its square. Remember: shoulders and knees covered for everyone.

Day 3: Fountains and piazzas

This is the easiest and happiest day. Throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain early in the morning, walk to the Pantheon and to Piazza Navona with its fountains and street artists. After lunch, climb the Spanish Steps and walk to Villa Borghese, where children can rent family bikes or row on the little lake.

Family tips: carry a refillable bottle and use the free drinking fountains; take taxis or a driver between areas; and plan a gelato stop every afternoon – it works wonders.

Where to stay

Near the Spanish Steps or Villa Borghese for walking and shopping, or the Rome Cavalieri on Monte Mario if you want pools and gardens. Our Rome city guide lists the hotels we recommend, halal restaurants and the Great Mosque of Rome.
